2008 Summer Workshops and Applications

The GREEN Teachers Institute (GTI) offers workshops designed to help preK-8 educators teach topics related to science and the environment through the use of hands-on activities and field experiences. We welcome applications from preK-8 teachers (K-5 for Picture-Perfect Science and 4–12 for Environmental Science and Stewardship for Teachers) in regional public and private schools. Participants can teach any subject, as environmental themes can be used across curricula. Each workshop consists of a summer and fall component; participants must register for both. The workshops are described briefly below.

We have finalized workshops for summer 2008, and applications are now available for download. If you have questions regarding workshops, please contact Mike Wright (information below).

Museum Resources for Teachers
One of the GTI’s most popular offerings, Museum Resources for Teachers uses the Hefner Zoology Museum’s galleries, exhibits, and collections to help teachers develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to teach basic biological, ecological, and environmental concepts using hands-on and inquiry-based methods. Participants develop science and environmental activities for use in both the classroom and non-formal settings. They earn 4 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up. This workshop is open to 40 teachers. There is a $360.00 stipend ($30 per day).
Weekdays June 16th-27th at Miami University's Oxford Campus
THIS WORKSHOP IS FILLED.

Picture-Perfect Science
Led by former classroom teachers Karen Ansberry and Emily Morgan, this two-week workshop, designed for K-5 teachers, is the “perfect” blend of literature and science! Participants learn the benefits and cautions of using children’s picture books in science, become familiar with the essential features of inquiry and the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) 5Es model, learn how to incorporate research-based reading comprehension strategies into science inquiry lessons, participate in model lessons, and receive an annotated bibliography of picture books correlated with Ohio Science Content Standards. They earn 4 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up. This workshop is open to 45 teachers. There is a $100.00 workshop fee.
Weekdays August 4th–15th at Miami University's Hamilton Campus
THIS WORKSHOP IS FILLED.

A People and Their Homeland: The Miami Tribe (Myaamia)
This two-week workshop is open to preK-8 teachers. Focused on the cultural and natural history of the Myaamia, the workshop illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education. Topics include the Myaamia worldview and language; traditional foods and customs; tribal concepts of nature, time, and history; the biology of culturally significant ecosystems, plants, and animals; and the future of the Myaamia as a living people. Teachers can use their new-found knowledge as a springboard for a broader understanding of native peoples. Participants earn 4 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 credit hours for the required academic year follow-up. This workshop is open to 25 teachers; 5 places are reserved for tribal educators. There is a $100.00 workshop fee.
Weekdays, July 7th-18th, at Miami University's Oxford Campus
THIS WORKSHOP IS FILLED.

Science for Ohio
This one-week workshop for K-8 teachers is based on the Science for Ohio website, acclaimed by the National Science Teachers Association, the Ohio Environmental Education Fund, and others. Led by Science for Ohio’s creator, 5th grade teacher John Farmer, participants explore ways in which the website, with its extensive set of hands-on and inquiry-based science activities, can be used in their curricula. They earn 2 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up. This workshop is open to 20 teachers. There is a $100.00 workshop fee.
Weekdays June 23rd– 27th at Williamsburg High School
THIS WORKSHOP IS FILLED.

InteGreat Science
This one-week workshop, for K-8 teachers, pairs the best instructional practices with available classroom technologies. Led by 5th grade teacher John Farmer, teachers participate in multiple science units that incorporate inquiry-based and hands-on investigations, verified websites, science-rich literature connections, interactive games that reinforce learning, and a pretest/posttest assessment model. They also design original science units that integrate hands-on and inquiry-based instruction with current technologies (including projection systems, presentation media, word processing, digital photography, hyperlinks, wikis). Participants earn 2 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up. This workshop is open to 20 teachers. There is a $100.00 workshop fee.
Weekdays July 14th-18th at Nagel Middle School
THIS WORKSHOP IS FILLED.

The following workshop will be offered pending funding. We will know by May 15th whether or not it is funded, but don’t wait to sign up. Apply now! Be sure to include your check (for workshop fees) with your application; we won’t cash any checks until we are certain the workshop is funded and will be offered as scheduled. Check the website for updates.

Environmental Science and Stewardship for Teachers
This two-week workshop is open to teachers of grades 4-12. Grouped according to grade levels (4-8 and 9-12), teachers learn about the root causes and environmental impacts of three pressing environmental issues—climate change, industrialized agriculture, and urbanization— as well as ways to practice and teach good stewardship of natural resources. They take part in field trips, in-class activities and discussions, and a service-learning project (which they implement by means of a $300 workshop stipend). Participants earn 4 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up. This workshop is open to 36 teachers. There is a $100.00 workshop fee.
Weekdays July 21st-August 1st at Miami University's Oxford Campus
THIS WORKSHOP IS FILLED FOR GRADE 4-8 TEACHERS. WE ARE STILL ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FROM GRADE 9-12 TEACHERS.
