GTI Workshops and Applications

2009 Summer Workshops

The GREEN Teachers Institute (GTI) offers workshops designed to help preK-12 educators teach topics related to science and the environment through the use of hands-on activities and field experiences. We welcome applications from preK-12 teachers in regional public and private schools. Participants can teach any subject, as environmental themes can be used across curricula. Each workshop consists of a summer and fall component; participants must register for both.

We are currently working on plans for summer 2009: Below are descriptions of the three workshops we intend to offer. If you would like information, when it is available, about dates and locations please contact Mike Wright (information below).

Museum Resources for Teachers

One of the GTI's most popular offerings, Museum Resources for Teachers uses the Hefner Zoology Museum's galleries, exhibits, and collections to help teachers develop the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to teach basic biological, ecological, and environmental concepts using hands-on and inquiry-based methods. Participants develop science and environmental activities for use in both the classroom and non-formal settings. They earn 4 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up.

InteGreat Science

This one-week workshop, for K-8 teachers, pairs the best instructional practices with available classroom technologies. Led by 5th-grade teacher John Farmer, teachers participate in multiple science units that incorporate inquiry-based and hands-on investigations, verified websites, science-rich literature connections, interactive games that reinforce learning, and a pretest/posttest assessment model. They also design original science units that integrate hands-on and inquiry-based instruction with current technologies (including projection systems, presentation media, word processing, digital photography, hyperlinks, wikis). Participants earn 2 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 graduate credits for the required academic year follow-up.

A People and Their Homeland: The Miami Tribe (Myaamia)

This two-week workshop is open to preK-8 teachers. Focused on the cultural and natural history of the Myaamia, the workshop illustrates the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education. Topics include the Myaamia worldview and language; traditional foods and customs; tribal concepts of nature, time, and history; the biology of culturally significant ecosystems, plants, and animals; and the future of the Myaamia as a living people. Teachers can use their new-found knowledge as a springboard for a broader understanding of native peoples. Participants earn 4 graduate credits for the summer workshop and 2 credit hours for the required academic year follow-up.
